WHY ENGAGE IN PLANNING
OPPORTUNITY
Working with a skilled financial advisor who follows best industry practices can add 3% or more in extra returns, not by picking winning stocks, but by making smart decisions across every part of a financial plan. This includes building a well-diversified portfolio, keeping it on track with regular rebalancing, and using tax-smart strategies that keep more money in your pocket. One of the most valuable benefits is simply having someone in your corner to prevent emotional decision-making – like panic-selling during a market downturn – which research shows can be worth more than any single investment strategy.
GOING IT ALONE
Can Anyone Really Beat the Market? The short answer: almost no one, not even the pros. And even if they do, it might have more to do with luck than skill. According to the S&P Dow Jones SPIVA report, over a 20-year period (2001–2020), more than 86% of actively managed funds failed to beat their benchmarks. For large-cap growth funds, that number climbed to 96%.
DECISION MAKING
A June 2025 CFP Board survey found that financial misinformation is everywhere online, and while more Americans are turning to the internet for financial advice, nearly 3 in 5 (57%) have made regrettable financial decisions based on misleading information. Nearly 2 in 5 Americans have lost $250 or more due to bad advice, and almost 1 in 5 have suffered losses exceeding $1,000. The most common types of misinformation include overblown investment return claims, inaccurate AI-generated advice, misleading Social Security information, questionable tax strategies, cryptocurrency hype, and false promises of student loan forgiveness.
